Project Description: This project was designed to build community relationships and unity, reclaim the past, increase pride and beautify Burnside Academy’s surrounding school community. Ten outdoor mosaic planters will be provided to black owned businesses on the South Side of Chicago near the school. In phase one of the project, one side of each planter was embellished with mosaic art designed specifically to remember Black Americans who lost their lives prematurely due to injustices in our society. Phase two will remember local Black Americans who lost their lives prematurely due to gun violence in Chicago. This participatory community project is ongoing. Each spring, Burnside students and staff members will replenish, reseed and revive the planters while the community businesses will water and nourish the plants.
